Meghan is a Gallaudet University alumni and professional sign language interpreter. She understands the needs of Deaf guests, and will do everything in her power to accommodate. Infinite Light is proud to offer an opportunity for Deaf people to experience this magical Medicine.
We try to offer many Deaf-friendly groups per year, with a signing Lead and often an additional interpreter (listed on the Calendar.) Please choose groups accordingly.
Interpreting will be provided at all group meetings and classes. Other than that, the interpreters are considered ¨on-call.¨ Personal conversations, depending on the availablity of the interpreters, will either be interpreted, or ample pen and paper will be provided when they are not available (since this is an all-day job, breaks will be needed, and will happen in the natural flow of the need.)
If you know an interpreter who would like to come on the trip, we may be able to offer them a service trade to work as one of the interpreters, or serve as backup, depending on the need. Contact us for more information.
The ceremonies themselves are not interpreted. They are usually silent except for the Icaros being sung by the shamans. These are meant to call in and manage the energy of the spirits (and are sung in Quechua and Spanish, so most hearing guests don't understand them.) The Icaros work whether the guests understand/hear them or not, and to try to interpret them would take away the entire experience of the ceremony, since the point is to see the results of what the Icaros are doing, in your own visions, in your own world.
Occassionally, people chat in between Icaros during breaks or after the ceremony. Unfortunately, the eyes ae very sensitive to physical light in ceremony, and having a flashlight on will be painful for everyone. Plus, just because the shamans are taking a break from Icaros, doesn't mean people are not in their own worlds having their own experiences, and often times do not want to participate in chatting. Therefore, this part cannot be interpreted. There doesn't seem to be a way around this, and if anyone has any ideas of how to accommodate, Meghan is open to suggestion.
If a Deaf guest needs assistance during ceremony and needs to get the Lead´s or shaman´s attention, they can either use vocal noise (quickest and easiest) or a quick flashlight to call them over. For urgent matters, even though the flashlight is hard on the eyes, we can use it for communication if necessary. All Deaf guests and hearing ASL users are required to bring a headlamp, preferably one with a soft, red setting.
